On April 26, 2025, a day meant to celebrate Filipino pride and heritage turned into one of unimaginable sorrow.
During the Lapu-Lapu Day festival in Vancouver — an annual event that honours Filipino history and culture — tragedy struck. A vehicle-ramming attack took the lives of 11 innocent people and injured at least 32 more, making it the deadliest attack in Vancouver’s history and the most devastating vehicle-ramming incident ever recorded in Canada.
The alleged suspect, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, a 30-year-old resident of Vancouver, was apprehended on the scene by courageous bystanders and is now facing 11 counts of second-degree murder. On July 17, 2025, Lo appeared in court for a mental fitness hearing to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
A Deep Loss for the Filipino Community
The Lapu-Lapu Day festival has always been a joyful time for the Filipino community in British Columbia — a day to gather, share food, honour traditions, and celebrate our rich cultural legacy. It was a time for families to come together and for Filipino caregivers, seniors, children, and newcomers to feel the warmth of belonging.
Instead, the community was left in shock and mourning.
Our hearts are with the families of those who were killed, those who were injured, and the countless others who carry the emotional scars of witnessing such a horrifying event. This tragedy reminds us how fragile life is and how quickly a moment of celebration can be turned upside down by senseless violence.
Understanding the Mental Health Connection
Authorities have confirmed that this was not an act of terrorism, but rather the result of a person in mental health crisis. Kai-Ji Lo had a history of psychiatric concerns and was under the care of a mental health team at the time of the incident.
This case raises important questions about mental health care in our society, and how vulnerable individuals — and the people around them — can fall through the cracks. As caregivers, many of us in the Filipino community know firsthand how critical it is to care for the mind, not just the body.

Why Mental Fitness Hearings Matter to the Public
This week, a consortium of media organizations — including CBC News — appeared in court to argue that the public has a right to understand the basis of the court’s decision. Speaking on behalf of the media, lawyer Daniel Coles stated:
“If a judge determines that the accused is not fit to stand trial, people need to understand why. That’s a pretty big decision,” Coles said.
“And conversely, if the judge decides he can stand trial notwithstanding perhaps evidence of diseases of the mind… the public needs to be satisfied that that’s also fair.”
At the moment, a publication ban prevents media from reporting on details discussed during the hearing. This raises questions for many — especially those directly affected — about how decisions will be made, and whether the public will ever understand why.
The Filipino Community Demands Justice — and Clarity
For our community, especially for those who lost loved ones or are still recovering, this isn’t just a legal matter — it’s deeply personal. Understanding whether the suspect is fit to be held accountable is essential for closure and trust in the justice system.
The Filipino Home Care Giver Network supports the call for transparency. Families, caregivers, and frontline workers who serve and support the community every day deserve to know the truth. Not to punish, but to heal, to learn, and to protect our future.
Caring for the Community in Times of Grief
This tragedy reminds us all of the importance of mental health awareness, community safety, and the vital role caregivers play in our society — not only in caring for others, but also in holding space during crisis and loss.
We encourage our community to stay informed, check in on one another, and seek professional support if you’re struggling in the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
Final Thoughts
As the court proceedings continue, we stand with the families of the victims and all those impacted. We echo Daniel Coles’ words: the public deserves to know the reasons behind the court’s decisions — especially when it comes to matters of life, death, and justice.
Let us continue to honour the victims by calling for truth, compassion, accountability, and healing.
